GMC Prep head football coach Bobby Rhoades has resigned after one season with the program.
The Union-Recorder was first to report the news last week, but Rhoades confirmed his resignation with The Baldwin Bulletin this week. He stepped away one month after the football season ended.
“The school and I were not a good fit for each other,” Rhoades said in a text sent to The Baldwin Bulletin.
GMC Prep went 3-7 overall during Rhoades’ single season at the helm in Milledgeville. The Bulldogs struggled at the beginning of the season, starting 1-6, but won two out of their last three games.
Rhoades inherited a program that went 4-7 in 2022 under former head coach Lee Coleman, who took the team to the state playoffs in three of his four seasons. Coleman went 23-20 in his four years.
Rhodes spent time in northwest Georgia at Pepperell High School, serving as the team’s offensive coordinator for six years. He was hired at GMC Prep this past February and arrived at the school on March 1 and went through spring practices and summer workouts with the Bulldogs.
GMC Prep is now looking for its third head coach in three years. The school’s new athletic director, Rusty Courson, will have to make the next hire after replacing Andrew Grodecki, who is relocating out of state. Grodecki was previously at Putnam County before GMC.
According to a source close to the program, the new hire won’t come until the new year.
Regardless, the new head coach will have a giant hill to climb after replacing graduating seniors Jonathan Roach and Jessie Washington. Those two players helped carry the team this past year under Rhoades.
“I appreciate the chance to work at GMC and wish them the best, but I am looking to pursue other opportunities,” Rhoades said.
