JMA RETURNS TO TO WINNING WAYS

The John Milledge Academy (JMA) Trojans returned to the winner’s column last week with a pair of victories over Tallulah Falls and Piedmont. The Trojans beat the Indians 18-8 in game one of a double header at Tallulah last Thursday but lost game two 14-4 on the same day.

The Trojans’ most important win came last Saturday in Milledgeville over region rival Piedmont. The Trojans 6-1 win over Piedmont gave JMA a sweep over the Cougars and improved their record to 12-6 overall and 3-2 in region play.

“They’re a great team over there (Piedmont). We just gotta continue playing our game,” Trojans head coach Tucker Bradley said. “It doesn’t really matter who’s over there as long as we play our game and keep putting the ball in play and getting good pitching performances and good defense, we’ve got a shot and that’s what we gotta keep doing the next couple of weeks.”

A big part of the Trojans victory was Gus Cummings who, had the best performance of his young career finishing his day with seven strikeouts over 6.2 innings and garnering his first career home run in the fourth inning. The Trojans’ offense gained five hits, including a pair of home runs with the second coming from sophomore Asa Wall in the fifth inning.

Bradley had high praise for his freshman RHP and outfielder after his performance on Saturday.

“It’s awesome,” Bradley said. “Gus is a freshman and he has really stepped up. Pitching, hitting, great defense, he’s got an incredible arm. It’s good to see him put it together on the mound and really give us a true number two (starting pitcher) so that when we get into the postseason, we can trust a guy to go out there and get us outs.

“I was telling a couple of our coaches he’s had four or five balls at the wall or hit the wall or got caught, and in a couple of years that’s gonna be dangerous when he’s hitting these balls over the fence. And he finally got one, so that’s awesome.”

The Trojans’ season continued Monday and Tuesday in Milledgeville vs. Westminster Christian (Watkinsville) and region opponent Tattnall Square Academy (TSA). The Trojans travel to Macon on Thursday to face TSA for the series finale. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
