The Georgia Military College Prep (GMCP) Bulldogs baseball team traveled to St. Simons Island last week for a three-game tournament at Frederica Academy.
The Bulldogs played Frederica in game one last Wednesday and lost 16-1. On Thursday they bounced back with a walk off 5-4 victory but finished the week with a 6-3 loss on Friday. Bulldogs head coach Kyle Redmond said there were lessons learned by himself and his team during the trip to St. Simons.
“Don’t play baseball on spring break,” Redmond said jokingly. “Seriously though, we went 0-3 last year on spring break and 1-2 this year. The guys have a really hard time focusing on baseball while at the beach. They didn’t come ready to play in any of the games as evidenced by the first inning of all three games. In game one, we gave up eleven runs in the first inning. If not for a couple of bad calls by the umpires, it would have been like six runs, but regardless that was simply due to my guys showing up to the game asleep.”
“In game two, we gave up three (runs) in the first (inning), but the guys didn’t give up and came back to win 5-4 on a bases clearing walk off double with two outs. In game three, we gave up four (runs) in the first (inning) and it was too much to overcome. I hope the boys learned they have to come ready to play every game, especially with two tough games this week and the playoffs the following week.”
Riley Woods delivered the game winning walk-off double scoring Jonas Crager, Lantz Holton and Hunter Langford to give GMCP the 5-4 win over Westminster Christian (Watkinsville). The Bulldogs will stay on the road this week with trips to George Walton Academy in Monroe on Wednesday and a trip to Dublin on Thursday to bring the regular season to close.
This week Redmond hopes to see his Bulldogs get back to being the team that won the region championship.
“Get focused back in. We played so well the week of Johnson County and had some momentum going but all of that evaporated at the beach,” Redmond said. “Need to get that momentum rolling again heading into the playoffs.”
