GCSU women’s basketball wraps 2022 with a win over AUM

    Georgia College & State University women’s basketball (9-3, 1-1 PBC) concluded 2022 with a 64-49 win over the University of Auburn at Montgomery (4-11, 3-8 GSC).

    The Bobcats started the game hot-outscoring the Warhawks 21-14 in the first quarter. As they moved into the second quarter, GCSU continued their double-digit scoring and showed their defensive prowess by scoring 14 points and holding AUM to eight.

    The Bobcats entered the half with an impressive 35-22 lead. Both squads came out of the half with hot hands and the Bobcats led the scoring for the third straight quarter at 16-13. The fourth-an- final quarter of the contest went to AUM, in terms of scoring, as they netted one more point than GCSU at 14-13 but GCSU took the game, 64-49.

    Defending Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Year Ashyia Willis led the scoring with 16 points. Willis went 6-for-11 from field goal range, including 1-for-1 from behind the three-point arc. Willis also shot at the free throw line going 3-for-4.

    Myra Strickland was hot off the bench as the Bobcats’ second-leading scorer with 13. She banked three field goals, including a three-point bucket. Most of her points were from the free throw stripe with an impressive 6-for-6. Dashaun Jackson, hailing from Miramar, Fla., rounded out the leading scorers with nine points. Jackson had an impressive day from field goal range at a 4-for-5 performance.

    Tall post player Jada Warren led the rebounding effort with an impressive 12 rebounds. Warren made her presence known on both sides of the court, nabbing seven offensive rebounds and five defensive rebounds. Another post player, Cassidy Markle, was the second leading rebounder for the Bobcats, just missing double digits by a single rebound. Markle eliminated the Warhawks’ opportunity for a second-chance basket by nabbing six defensive rebounds. Alexa Geary rounded out the leading rebounders, corralling seven rebounders with five coming under the defensive basket.
