Frustration mounts for Bulldogs basketball

GMC Prep is off to a rough start this season, losing all five games played so far, including Saturday’s non-conference match against the visiting Gatewood Gators. The Bulldogs fell 80-32 in a morning game that was never in doubt.

Gatewood took command early, leading 21-9 after the first quarter and 44-16 at halftime. By the fourth quarter, Gatewood’s underclassmen were on the court almost exclusively.

GMC head coach Shawn Dennis appeared frustrated but not discouraged by his team’s showing in front of a sparse but enthusiastic hometown crowd.

“Before the game, we talked about four things we needed to do to compete,” Dennis said. “We had to get back in transition, limit second-chance shots, close out on shooters, and get back on defense to limit the transition points.

“But everything we talked about before the game, we didn’t do, they just got too many second-chance opportunities. They ran us up and down the floor, got a lot of open looks, and secondchance baskets. We just didn’t do the things we talked about.”

GMC senior Logan McMillan finished as his team’s top scorer with 9 points, followed by juniors Tommy Carty with 8, and Benjamin Vaughn at 4 points.

“There were points where we actually ran the offense and got good looks,” Dennis acknowledged. “So, when we do what we’re supposed to, things will work out fine for us. We’ve just got to do the things we’ve been coached to do. We just need to get back in the gym and get practicing.”

GMC visits Lake Oconee Academy on Thursday, followed by its next home game at 5 p.m. this Saturday at the Cordell Event Center in Milledgeville.
