GMCP BULLDOGS WIN REGION TITLE
The Georgia Military Prep (GMCP) Bulldogs baseball team completed not only a sweep of the Johnson County Trojans last week, but a sweep of all of their region opponents in 2026 to capture their first region title since 2009.
The Bulldogs took down the Trojans last Tuesday in Wrightsville with a decisive 14-2 victory before returning home Wednesday and losing 12-4 to the Academy for Classical Education (ACE) Gryphons.
The Bulldogs and Trojans then met again at Craig Field in Milledgeville last Friday in what turned out to be a thrilling final matchup.
GMCP trailed 4-1 entering the bottom of the sixth inning but the Bulldogs began to rally and scored five runs before holding the Trojans scoreless in the seventh inning to secure a 6-4 Bulldogs victory.
The Bulldogs had officially clinched the Region 5 title with their 14-2 win last Tuesday but the win on Friday gave GMCP an undefeated 10-0 record against all region opponents for the 2026 season.
“Clinching the region title at Johnson was very emotional. We worked so hard to get to that point,” Bulldogs head coach Kyle Redmond said. “This was honestly three years in the making. When I took this job three years ago, I knew year three would be the year that we could do something special.
“The win over Johnson at home was unreal. We had to fight back from 4-0, but our guys never gave up. This was more of a chestpounding win. It wasn’t as teary eyed as when we clinched. These boys so badly wanted to have that final region record be 10-0 and they made it happen. This was by far the most exciting week I’ve ever had as a coach. However, I told the boys that we’re not done yet.”
The Bulldogs sixth-inning rally last Friday at Johnson County began with a triple by Lantz Holton, followed by a walk and a hit-by-pitch to load the bases.
Trenten Tanner then grounded out to first base which allowed Holton to score and cut Johnson’s lead to 4-2.
Hunter Langford scored next on a passed ball and Chase McCrary reached on a base hit single, scoring Seth Ussery to tie the game at four.
Ayden Hamm, then reached on a single that scored Noah Goddard and Lofton Binion to give GMCP its first lead of the game.
Goddard entered in relief of starting pitcher Ayden Hamm who pitched six innings striking out eight, allowing five hits and four runs, and two walks. Goddard also completed the final inning, striking out two of the four batters he faced to close out the game and seal the 6-4 victory.
Moving forward, Redmond said he just hopes his team will come together and be ready to play at their best in the playoffs.
“We are so close to peaking, which is a good thing,” Redmond said. “Pitching and defense have been consistent all year. Our bats are starting to heat up. I’d just like to see us put it all together in one game. I need them to refocus and not relax now that we’ve won region.
“We want that final record to look as good as possible, so these final five games are important. Hopefully, we can get everything clicking at the same time as we head into the playoffs.”
GMCP will be on the road all week for spring break on St. Simons Island for the annual Frederica Academy invitational baseball tournament. The Bulldogs face Frederica on Wednesday at 4 p.m., Westminster Christian (Watkinsville) on Thursday at 2 p.m., and George Walton Academy on Friday at 4 p.m.
