Bobcat volleyball has best start in program history

The Georgia College & State University volleyball team improved to a perfect 8-0 on the season, which is the longest win streak in program history. The Bobcats took down Emory & Henry College and the University of West Georgia, both in five sets, to cap off the weekend at the West Georgia Tournament on Sept. 9.

The Bobcats took the Wasps to five sets (23-25, 25-13, 25-22, 21-25, 15-10) for the first win of the day. Rachel Machovec highlighted the game for GCSU as she picked a 1,000th career kill on her 16th of the match.

Machovec led the team in kills with 17. The Bobcats had two other players with double-digit kills Rosa Fisher with 14 and Mary Kate Kotzin with 11. Riese Johnson nabbed another double-double on the season leading the team with 30 assists. She also led the team with six service aces.

On the defensive side of things, four Bobcats had double-digit digs including the libero Alanis Bernis with 20. With 13 digs on the match, Machovec earned herself yet another double-double of the young season. Olivia Alvarez and Johnson rounded out the double-digit digs with 13 and 10 respectively. The great wall of Bobcats had a massive impact on the match as there were 20 total block assists. Brooke Roberts led the effort with five while Camryn Carlton and Kotzin added four each.

The second match of the day was against the Wolves where the Bobcats took them to five sets (25-22, 25-18, 18-25, 19-25, 15-10) as well and took the win.

Fisher led the offense with her season-high 16 kills.

Machovec added another double-double performance on the day with 11 kills and 12 digs. Bernis led the squad in digs with 16 while Alvarez rounded out the double-digit digs with 10.

Johnson had yet another performance as the Bobcat setter picking up 35 assists.

GCSU returns to action Friday, Sept.15 for the Peach Belt Conference/ Gulf South Conference Crossover in Augusta.
