Conference play for the Georgia College & State University (GCSU) women’s soccer team (5-5-2, 4-2-1 PBC) delivered a win and a loss last week.
The first contest was against the lone winless team in the conference, Albany State University, and the Bobcats added to ASU’s streak of futility Oct. 5, notching a 1-0 win after scoring their only first-half goal of the season.
GCSU was fouled just outside the 18-yard box and awarded a free kick. Ava Martin, from Gainesville, took the free kick, then Aralyn Everett of Covington scored from near the Golden Rams net.
Meanwhile, the Bobcat defense played one of its best games of the season, allowing only two shots on goal.
Marietta’s Kate Richardson got the first-half start in goal for GCSU, nabbing one save before freshman Mya Necolletos, from Davie, Fla., got the secondhalf start and was called upon to make just one save, as well secure the shutout.
After the goal was scored, GCSU head coach Jack Marchant began making substitutions, allowing several different players to see game action. Nine substitutions were made on defense alone.
The next contest for the Bobcats came Oct. 8, on the road against No. 4 Columbus State University. The GCSU offense was shut out and able to get off five shots total, with just three on goal.
On the defensive side of things, the Cougars were a tough offense to shut down as they had 21 attempted shots, with 10 on goal. GCSU goalkeeper Richardson managed to corral eight saves and now has 233 career saves, good for the third most in school history.
After taking on Newberry College at home Oct. 12, while honoring six seniors on the team for GCSU senior night, the Bobcats women’s soccer team will visit North Georgia College Oct.15.
