Jerry Norris “Smokey” Veal, 80, passed away on May 6, 2026. Moores Funeral Home had charge of arrangements. Survivors include his wife, Ann Graham Veal, his children, Jay Veal (Jasna), Arlene Alex (Glenn), and Sumer Veal (Jason), all of Athens; six grandchildren, Ashley Ann Golden (Richard) of Athens, Harry Alex (Katie) of Atlanta, Grace O’neill (Patrick) of Asheville, NC, Niko Cope, Max Veal, and Clark Veal; one great-grandchild, Edison Golden, all of Athens; his brother, Dr. T. Stephen Veal of Milledgeville; and a number of nieces and nephews. Veal . rst became the county's . re chief in 1981 and retired in 2007.
