Milledgeville’s best parks and pet-friendly spots

On any given afternoon, it’s not unusual to see dogs splashing along the river, trotting down shaded trails or lounging under café tables across Milledgeville. As pet ownership continues to rise, so does the demand for spaces where dogs are just as welcome as their owners.

From dedicated dog parks to pet-friendly patios, Milledgeville offers a growing number of options for residents looking to spend time outdoors with their dogs. While the city may not have an abundance of off-leash parks, local dog owners say the available spaces make a strong impact.

Leading the pack is the Oconee River Greenway Dog Park, widely considered the best overall option in the area. The park combines a fenced-in off-leash space with miles of scenic walking trails and river access, making it a versatile destination for both exercise and relaxation.

“It’s the best of everything in one place,” said Milledgeville resident Holden Lewis. “We usually start with a walk on the trail, then head to the dog park so he can run around. It wears him out in the best way.”

The Greenway’s popularity stems from its ability to serve multiple purposes. Owners can enjoy shaded paths while their dogs explore, and the nearby river provides a natural cooling spot during warmer months.

For those looking for a quieter experience, Central City Park and other local trail systems rank second among dog-friendly spots. While these locations do not offer designated off-leash areas, they provide open green space and peaceful walking paths ideal for routine outings.

“I actually prefer places like this sometimes,” said Georgia College student Abbie Hughes. “It’s less chaotic, and my dog stays calmer on a leash.”

Beyond parks, several local businesses have embraced the city’s dog-friendly culture. Restaurants with outdoor seating, including downtown favorites, often welcome dogs on patios, allowing owners to incorporate their pets into everyday outings.

“It makes everything easier,” said resident Jackie Testerman. “You don’t have to rush home or leave them behind. They can just come with you.”

The growing presence of dogs in public spaces reflects a broader shift in the community. As more residents prioritize outdoor activity and companionship with their pets, demand for dog-friendly amenities continues to increase.

“I’ve definitely noticed more people out with their dogs lately,” Testerman said. “It feels like a bigger part of the community than it used to be.”

While Milledgeville may still be expanding its offerings, its existing parks, trails and businesses provide a solid foundation for dog owners. With the Oconee River Greenway setting the standard, the city continues to evolve into a place where both residents and their pets can feel at home.

For many, that’s what matters most. “As long as my dog is happy,” Lewis said, “that’s all I need.”
