The Milledgeville City Council held a brief meeting March 10 at City Hall to discuss community updates and announcements.
Mayor Mary Parham-Copelan mentioned she had received several threatening emails during the past week and encouraged the community to stick together.
“We are one Milly. We’re one community, and we’re going to get this job done in these four years,” Copelan said. “Let’s put some of this foolishness to rest and go ahead and be about the business of the city. Together we can do things.”
Copelan also spoke about a new fire truck recently added to the city’s fleet.
“As you came up tonight you saw us standing out there in front of it,” Copelan said. “We have our new fire truck that’s coming online, and it is gorgeous.”
Council members were also reminded about the Georgia Municipal Association Annual Convention scheduled for June 26-30 in Savannah.
City Manager Melba Hinson-Butts recognized March as Procurement Professionals Month and mentioned city employee Jackie Haley, who serves as president of her procurement association and recently received a proclamation from the governor. This is a time set aside to recognize the work of people responsible for purchasing goods and services for government agencies and organizations.
Hinson-Butts also noted that March is Women’s History Month and encouraged residents to take time to recognize women in their lives.
“I know somebody in this audience knows a wonderful woman in your life somewhere,” she said. “Just take that time to appreciate them and remember the things women have gone through to make things better for us today.”
During new business, the council approved a resolution allowing the city to enter an agreement with Government Tax Services LLC to collect delinquent property taxes for Milledgeville.

The mayor reminded residents that anyone wishing to speak during public comment must sign in before the meeting begins. The sign-in sheet is taken up 15 minutes before the meeting, so speakers must arrive early.
The next meeting will be held on March 24 at Milledgeville City Hall with residents welcome to attend.
