Four-dollar gas prices have led to a recent increase in fourletter words around Milledgeville.
The statewide average for a gallon of regular unleaded reached $4.18 late last week, which was the highest since the summer of 2022, according to GasBuddy’s database.
With these economic anxieties in mind, Gov. Brian Kemp announced on Monday that the state of Georgia is suspending its excise tax on gasoline and diesel. The state’s normal take is 33.3 cents per gallon and 37.3 cents, respectively.
The executive order went into place at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday and will run through Oct. 29. Kemp signed a similar 60-day executive order back in late March.
Georgia is one of the only states to suspend its fuel tax at any point this year. During the previous suspension, Georgia had the cheapest gas in the nation for several weeks, according to AAA. There currently are three states below the $4 mark – Indiana, Kansas and Mississippi – according to AAA. California, per usual, leads the way in the most expensive category at $6.38.
