Man arrested for spray painting businesses
On Nov. 9, law enforcement was dispatched to Greene Street Pool Tavern, 120 W. Greene St., at 9:55 p.m. in reference to damage to property. Dalton Durden had spray painted inside the men’s bathroom. On the counter was “Zealot” spray painted in black spray paint covering the length of the counter and on both sinks. The same was painted on the wall above the right sink, furthest stall once on one wall and twice on another. On the divider for the two stalls was a profanity and “zealot” again.
During a search of Durden, a personal cigarette pack was located with a misdemeanor amount of marijuana. Durden was transported to the Baldwin County jail and, on the way, other reports of spray paint to buildings was uncovered. He spray painted at Jimmy Johns, Shima Sushi Bar and Grill, The Brick, and Ned Kelley Down Under. Warrants for five counts of criminal damage to property in the second degree were issued against Durden.
Two men arrested for drugs
On Nov. 13, while law enforcement was on patrol, an officer observed a vehicle parked inside the fence of Eagle Self Storage, at 146 Garrett Way. The vehicle was behind the storage building with its lights on. The gate to the facility had been pushed open and left unlocked, with the open lock hooked on the chain link. One female, later identified as Amy Veal, was sitting inside the storage unit and a male, later identified as Daniel Mullis, was standing near the vehicle. A third individual, identified as Kenneth Waller, was sitting in the passenger seat of the vehicle. Veal stated she had permission from the property owner to be on site. She also had a key to the front gate. Waller appeared to be nervous and attempted to open the door and exit the vehicle multiple times.
Waller was given multiple instructions to stay in the vehicle and continued to try and exit. While being given instructions, Waller ran out of the front gate but stopped when an officer drew their taser with a verbal warning. On the floor of the vehicle, between the seat and the door sill from where Waller sat, an officer located a glass smoking device commonly used to smoke illegal narcotics in plain sight. Between the passenger seat and the center console a small plastic bag containing an amount of a clear, crystal like substance, believed to be methamphetamine was also found. A black plastic bag tied in a small knot, containing the same clear, crystal-like substance was located behind the driver’s seat, on the floorboard. Nothing else of evidentiary value was located or removed from the vehicle.
Mullis was informed he was now under arrest and was transported to the jail without incident. It was determined Waller had provided false information when requested to identify himself.
Waller was arrested for felony possession of methamphetamine, misdemeanor obstruction of officers, and misdemeanor providing false name and date of birth to law enforcement. Waller also had two additional outstanding arrest warrants unrelated to this case. Mullis was arrested for felony possession of methamphetamine.
Drunk driver dozes off in traffic stop
On Nov. 15, law enforcement was dispatched to the 2400 block of North Columbia Street in reference to a slow moving vehicle traveling south with the driver passed out at the wheel. Before arrival, dispatch notified the officer that the vehicle was approaching the traffic light in front of the Milledgeville Mall. A gray 2024 Hyundai Sonata was traveling south on North Columbia Street at a slow speed.
When driving past the vehicle to turn around, the officer noticed the driver, later identified as Jaylon Hill, reclined back in the seat with his head facing the driver side window. The officer initiated a traffic stop and the vehicle came to a stop but then started to move again, causing it to collide with the front of the patrol car.
After the vehicle was stopped, the officer approached the driver’s side of the vehicle, where Hill was asleep.
After Hill awoke, he agreed to provide a breath sample on the portable breath test, indicating a breath alcohol concentration over the legal limit to drive. The State administered chemical test of Hill’s breath indicated a 0.110g breath alcohol concentration. Hill received a citation for driving under the influence of alcohol.
Entering autos at Waterford Apartments
On Nov. 15, the Milledgeville Police Department received multiple reports of entering autos at Waterford Apartments on North Pickens Street. Four cars were rummaged through and a wallet, and two social security cards were stolen from a vehicle while the other three were visibly rummaged through but were not missing anything. Multiple vehicle owners reported their vehicle being unlocked for various reasons.
Woman tries to hide from law enforcement
On Nov. 15, law enforcement responded to the Economy Inn, located at 1616 N. Columbia St., in reference to an anonymous warrant tip regarding Jessica Scarbary. After locating her room, officers observed a white male wearing a black hoodie standing under the carport area of the motel, staring toward the room. After several unsuccessful attempts to make contact at the room, officers left the area and relocated across the street to observe the room. While observing the room, the man, identified as John Roy Whidby, walked across the hotel property and entered the room. He exited the room multiple times, paced back and forth and looked around. Law enforcement eventually made contact with Whidby, who was initially uncooperative. After informing him officers were there for Scarbary, he opened the door and advised she was inside.
Law enforcement called out to her several times, announcing themselves as sheriff’s deputies and instructing her to come out. After receiving no response, officers entered the room and found the bathroom door locked with the light off. Scarbary refused to open the door, so an officer entered the room and successfully unlocked the bathroom door. Scarbary had an active probation violation warrant and was placed under arrest for a new charge of obstruction of officers.
Man arrested for hiding cocaine
On Nov 15, while patrolling the Dollar General on North Columbia Street, an officer observed a white Honda Accord parked on the side of the building. Upon noticing the patrol vehicle, the driver pulled away from the building and proceeded toward North Columbia Street. Checking the vehicle’s tag through GCIC, it was discovered the registration was suspended and the vehicle did not have valid insurance coverage. The officer attempted to stop the vehicle and the driver activated the turn signal as if to enter the Bulk Storage parking lot, but continued north on North Columbia Street at approximately 55 miles per hour. While following the vehicle for approximately one mile, the driver appeared to discard unknown substances out of the driver’s window. The driver eventually pulled into the parking lot of the Waffle House, located at 3059 N.
Columbia St. The driver, who was identified as Shawn Allen, was detained. While detaining Allen, an officer observed the front seat passenger, Kelvin Dumas, place an object behind the driver’s seat on the floorboard. Dumas stated it was his cigarette pack, which contained a marijuana joint he had been smoking earlier. Due to his attempt to conceal the marijuana, Dumas was detained. A third passenger was identified and released from the scene. Allen stated there was a pipe used to smoke marijuana located in the vehicle’s center console. During a search of the vehicle, officers located a clear bag with white powder residue between the driver’s seat and the center console, a pipe containing marijuana, which Shawn stated belonged to him, and a cigarette pack containing a clear bag of white powdery substance suspected to be cocaine. Allen stated he smoked the “LD brand,” which matched the brand of the cigarette pack containing the suspected cocaine. Allen later admitted it was cocaine.
No additional illegal substances or items of evidentiary value were located during the search. After confirming that Dumas had no outstanding warrants, he was released from the scene. A warrant for possession of cocaine was secured on Shawn Allen. He was also issued citations for no insurance and suspended vehicle registration.
Woman threatens dispatcher and officers
On Nov. 15, law enforcement was dispatched to 113 Crestview Ave. in reference to unlawful conduct during a 911 call. Prior to officer arrival, dispatch advised they believed a juvenile called 911 to report a theft. While dispatch was trying to get the address of the caller, the caller started to curse at and threatened to physically assault the dispatcher. Law enforcement made contact with Chelsey Henry at the residence. Henry admitted to calling 911 and speaking with the dispatcher. When an officer explained why she was not supposed to curse and threaten the dispatchers, Henry threatened the officer and a deputy. Warrants for unlawful conduct during a 911 call and terroristic threats were secured against Chelsey Henry.
