GWVH hosts inaugural Foodie Friday Food Fair

The Georgia War Veterans Home (GWVH) is cooking up more than just food with its Foodie Friday Food Fair.

While the event is starting small, with just a few options avaliable, Activities Director Michelle Flood’s goal is for it to become a weekly event.

“I’d like to see this becoming an important thing for people to go out and do each Friday,” she said.

The Foodie Friday Food Fair aims to bring community and life enrichment to both veterans and staff.

“I think it’s important for the veterans in this home to have the community coming to them,” Flood said. “We’re hoping this event is something that benefits not only the veterans but staff and locals as well.”

The fair also aims to provide more “quick and delicious” options to those living nearby, as well as staff in nearby workplaces throughout their short lunch breaks.

This week, event attendees enjoyed meals prepared by the “Get in My Belly” food tent. Specializing in soul food, the menu for the day included birria beef and chicken tacos, honey hot catfish, and honey hot or plain chicken wings. For sides, foodies could choose from collard greens, smoked gouda mac and cheese, or dressing. To finish off the meal, a slice of richly flavored red velvet cake was available.

Prepared and served by the Moore family, the menu blended tradition, creativity, and heart reminding everyone that soul food can feed the spirit of a community.

For any food trucks or tents wanting to join, a copy of their city permit, and their last health inspection (within the last 30 days) must be submitted to participate.

The fair is located at the Woods Building parking lot near the water tower, with an ATM onsite, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Friday; weather permitting.
