Freedom Fireworks released a public apology July 8 for disappointment around its July 4 fireworks display.
President Ryan Wells of Freedom Fireworks wrote, “We understand that many of you were looking forward to a memorable celebration, and we deeply regret that the event did not meet your expectations. We take full responsibility for the issues that occurred and understand the frustration and letdown this caused the city and many of its visitors.”
In the comments of the apology shared on the City of Milledgeville Facebook page, residents report the show lasted around 11-12 minutes and that it was not dark enough to begin. Many residents shared their disappointment with the show but applauded Freedom Fireworks for owning up to its mistake.
“In light of this, we are offering a full refund of the amount of $13,500 to the city of Milledgeville. Additionally, to demonstrate our commitment to make things right, we are extending a 50% discount to any upcoming fireworks display hosted by the city or any of its affiliates,” wrote Wells. “We are taking immediate steps to ensure that future events reflect the high standards your community deserves, and we are grateful for your feedback and continued support.”
According to City Manager Hank Griffeth, the contractor was chosen because “they had been trying to get the city’s business for some time” and offered to do the show on July 4, rather than after the holiday.
“The terms of the contract the city signed with Freedom Fireworks were not met,” said Griffeth. “When the owner of the company was contacted, he agreed that the city did not get what was in the contract and was paid for. As a sign to his professionalism, he sent the apology that was posted.”
During the July 8 City Council meeting, Mayor Mary Parham-Copelan apologized for the display and promised a better show would be hosted next year. Griffeth also read the apology at the meeting and posted it to the city’s Facebook page the following day.
As of July 9, nothing else has been posted or said regarding future fireworks shows.
