City Council approves LED roadway lighting; district changes may occur

The Milledgeville City Council met on Tuesday evening to approve the installation of two more LED roadway lights on Leo Court. City Manager Hank Griffeth also provided a report on the development of a redistricting process for Baldwin County due to changes in the 2020 census.

Tuesday’s meeting did not feature public comments or updates on old business; therefore, the session quickly proceeded to the council unanimously approving a lighting services agreement with Georgia Power to install the lights.

The Baldwin Bulletin briefly spoke with Griffeth after Tuesday’s meeting about the resolution.

“We had some residents request additional street lighting on Leo Court,” Griffeth explained. “[The resolution] must come before the council because it goes under a Georgia Power contract. The mayor signs a Georgia Power contract, and according to our charter, the mayor cannot sign without the council’s approval.”

Most of Tuesday’s meeting consisted of Griffeth’s report on the county’s 2020 census redistricting processes. Griffeth handed each council member two draft maps showing possible changes to their designated districts. The map results were based on the data from before and after the county’s 2020 census.

The city manager’s report for the meeting lasted nearly one hour due to the drastic changes in the 2020 census and its data.

“After the census numbers were determined, we realized that each district needed a lower number of people per population because the census had decreased,” Griffeth said.

The Milledgeville City Council will discuss the issue further at its upcoming Middle Georgia Regional Commission meeting in Macon and will soon announce the date, time, and location of the open meeting.
