A local Baldwin County woman was recently recognized as the oldest resident at Fellowship Meriwether.
Ginny Cartwright turned 102 December 23 and was honored December 18 in festivities at the assisted living facility on Meriwether Road. Her daughter, Carol Ballew, said Ms. Cartwright has a simple philosophy for enjoying a long life.
“She believes that the secret to her longevity is ‘loving God, enjoying life, and treating people right,’” Ballew said.
Ms. Cartwright attended Mississippi State College for Women and graduated in 1944 with a degree in education. She also married that year, and her husband passed away in 2000. Carol and David Ballew live in Baldwin County, and Cartwright’s only grandson lives in Atlanta. He and his wife are expecting Cartwright’s great-grandson in February.
It is interesting to note that in 1922, the average family income was a little over $2,000, the average cost of a new auto was $390, a postage stamp cost two cents, and the average price of a new home was between $6,000 and $7,000. Firsts in that year included insulin, ginger ale, Maytag washing machines, water skis, and radio stations.
