Officers locate 14.76 ounces of marijuana.
On May 17, law enforcement conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle at Friendly Gus, located at 118 Highway 49, for expired registration. The driver, identified as Keon Freeman, informed police he did not have a license and advised them that the registration mother's mother’s name. The officer told him that the car was registered to his name. While speaking with him, officers noted the odor of marijuana coming off his person. Freeman stated he does not smoke marijuana, and"the smell “must be from him just leaving" the club.”
An officer legally searched the vehicle and located a scale in the center console. Before the search, Freeman called someone on his phone, and during the search, Shondrea Lango arrived on the scene. A small commotion occurred between another deputy, Lango, and Freeman. As officers detained Freeman in handcuffs, Lango approached the vehicle despite multiple commands to step away.
The female returned to her car after several commands to, and an officer returned to search the vehicle. He located 14.76 ounces of marijuana, in three separate bags, located in a bag owned by Lango. Lango and Freeman were arrested and charged with misdemeanor willful obstruction of officers and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. Freeman is additionally charged with a traffic citation for expired registration.
A man breaks into an abandoned building.
On May 17, law enforcement responded to the Stop N Shop Gas Station at 550 S. Wilkinson St. in reference to a man breaking into and actively in the building of 540 S. Wilkinson St. and actively in the building. Officers attempted to contact the subject, who was later identified as Michael Radney, but he became irate.
Radney exited the abandoned building, yelling that someone was stealing his paycheck. When the officer approached Radney to detain him, Radney maneuvered as if he were going to strike the officer, and the officer stepped back to retrieve his taser. While stepping back, Radney quickly returned to the building and barricaded himself inside.
After attempting to speak with Radney through a window for a few minutes, he finally walked outside and was detained. A witness stated they saw Radney yelling and trying to open the door to the abandoned building. When he was unsuccessful, he saw him use an object to cut a red rope that was securing the door.
Officers searched the area in an attempt to locate the object that was used to cut the ribbon to enter the building but were unsuccessful. They located a red ribbon, but it did not appear to have been cut. Radney was taken into custody and charged with criminal trespassing and obstruction by officers.
Unknown subjects break into a vacant apartment.
On May 20, law enforcement was dispatched to 1218 W. Thomas Circle about property damage.
Maintenance personnel stated that when he started checking the vacant apartments, he found the apartment on West Thomas Circle had been broken into and damaged. He stated he last checked the apartment on May 17, around 5 p.m., and it was fine. The walls had numerous holes in them, where somebody kicked them. The estimated cost to repair the damage is approximately $2,400.
Man steals Nike shorts from Sports Additions
On May 20, law enforcement was dispatched to 2400 N. Columbia St.
A-10 (Sports Additions) about a theft that had already occurred. The complainant stated just before closing a male came into the business and picked several items. He attempted to hide a pair of orange Nike shorts, valued at $55, in between other clothing he wanted to try on in the dressing room and left behind.
When the male started to exit the store, the complainant saw the orange shorts sticking out from the male's the male's clothing. He stated he asked the male if he needed anything to go with the shorts, and the male left the store. Mall security went to the exit to try to stop the male because the mall was locked up.
However, security reported that another business owner had let the male out, not knowing the male had stolen anything.
Man steals Lifesaver gummies from The Market
On May 20, law enforcement was dispatched to The Market, on 821 N. Columbia St., about a theft report. The complainant stated two unknown males entered the location, and one looked suspicious while he was in the candy aisle. The suspicious male reportedly left the candy aisle and went to another aisle, looking at water bottles.
The complainants stated he could not see what was in the male’s pockets because he had his hand in them. The male subject reportedly paid for a bag of Trolli gummi worms, but not the item that was in his pocket. The item in his pocket was Lifesaver Gummies, which cost $4. Camera footage showed the male subject picking the bag of Lifesaver Gummies and placing it in his pocket once he was between the aisles.
Footage also showed the male subject enter another aisle and put his hand in his pocket when the complainant walked past him.
Law enforcement was able to get in touch with the driver of the vehicle the subject left in and obtain contact information for the subject, but have been met with harmful contact.
