The Baldwin County Board of Education held its monthly meeting on March 12, where it was announced that long-time board member Lyn Chandler will not be running for reelection.
Superintendent Dr. Noris Price stated in the closing of her report that the Board of Education member of 12 years, Lyn Chandler, will be stepping down from the board, creating an open position for the upcoming elections in May.
“I’ll be 80 years old this year and it’s time for some new people…Thank you for the opportunity to be on this board, it’s a great board,” said Chandler.
Over the past 12 years, Chandler has held the positions of board member, chair, and vice-chair of the Baldwin County Board of Education. Dr. Price noted Chandler has made a huge impact on the district during his time on the board.
Another announcement was made regarding the new assistant principal of Midway Hills Academy. Early in the meeting when the board approved the personnel report, they also approved Janice Smith to fill the position, who is prioritizing two things going into her new post.
“Student achievement at the forefront of everything and being a positive impact and role model for students as well as adults,” said Smith.
Smith was previously the dean of students at L. H. Williams Elementary School in the Bibb County School District.
On the subject of approvals, the board approved the Guaranteed Maximum Price for the upcoming renovation of the Baldwin County Board of Education administrative offices.
Phil Best, from Garbutt Construction Company, was in attendance to present a pricing summary and timeline for the renovation. The approved total is $3,628,880, which includes site demolition, a new air conditioning system, and a new roof, among many other improvements.
Best stated they want to start as quickly as possible. The plan is to begin the renovations when classes are dismissed at the end of May. The project will be completed in August of this year.
Dr. Price concluded the meeting by stating that the budget will be the main topic of conversation for the board’s upcoming retreat on March 18, as the final budget is still planned to be approved at the June 11 meeting.
