The Baldwin County Board of Education recognized The Baldwin Bulletin on Dec. 12 during its monthly meeting.
Earlier this fall, the Baldwin County School District (BCSD) nominated The Baldwin Bulletin for the Georgia School Board Association’s (GSBA) Beacon Award. This was the first year that BCSD has nominated for The Baldwin Bulletin and the first year that it won the award.
“We nominated The Baldwin Bulletin for its fair reporting,” said Dr. Noris Price, Baldwin County Superintendent. “We are thankful to both of our local papers and the role they play in informing our parents and community.”
On Nov. 30, associate editor of The Baldwin Bulletin Bailey McCully and her mother Janet Ballard attended the GSBA’s annual conference to receive the award in person, alongside The Oglethorpe Echo and Liberty County Schools Public Relations that also placed.
“I’m very thankful to the Baldwin County School District for nominating The Baldwin Bulletin for this award. Attending the conference in Atlanta was a first-time experience for me and reemphasized what I enjoy most about local journalism,” said McCully. “While our goal is to inform the public, we also strive to give coverage and care to all that occurs in Baldwin County. It’s been an honor to make such a difference in the short time that I’ve been here.”
During the December meeting, Board of Education Chair Dr. Gloria Wicker and Dr. Price presented McCully with a certificate of recognition and the Beacon Award, which was previously accepted at the conference.
GSBA’s Beacon Award recognizes reporting on public education by people, representatives, or organizations whose coverage or projects over time have created an understanding of public education issues by informing the general public about programs, policies, and/or issues affecting the public schools, students, and/or communities.
The GSBA Awards committee made up of board of education members from all over Georgia, examines the nominations submitted by each local board and chooses three that best reflect fair and unbiased reporting.
The Baldwin County School District commends The Baldwin Bulletin for its fair reporting and impact on students, families, and the school community.
