Warrant issued for driver who initiated pursuit

Sheriff’s deputy Saralynn Henderson was on routine patrol on Vinson Highway at Caraker Avenue when she observed a Chevrolet S-10 stopped at a red light without working brake lights.

Upon turning on emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop, the vehicle turned onto Swint Avenue and then into a gas station parking lot. Henderson was able to see the driver’s window and identified him as Ronald Williams. The suspect then exited the gas station at a high rate of speed and turned onto Irwinton Road, refusing to stop. The deputy informed dispatch that she was in a vehicle pursuit, according to an incident report.

“Williams laid drag marks as he continued fleeing down Caraker Avenue,” Henderson reported. “Williams then turned onto South Jefferson Street towards The Milledgeville Manor.”

She added he drove through the apartment complex and exited onto South Elbert Street. She was joined by Deputy Cecilio Reyes as the suspect crossed Vinson Highway and turned onto Pine Avenue. Henderson briefly lost sight of the suspect, according to the report, but she was able to quickly locate him again on Oak Avenue as he turned into the yard at 251 Oak Avenue.

From there, Williams fled on foot.

“I stopped my patrol car and yelled for Williams to stop,” Henderson wrote.

“I observed Williams run behind the house at 261 Oak Ave., where I lost sight of him. I was then assisted by Deputy Reyes and multiple Milledgeville police officers in attempting to locate Williams.”

An extensive search of the area was unsuccessful in locating Williams, according to the report, and his vehicle was impounded.

A warrant was issued for Williams on charges of fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, felony; and citations for reckless driving, failure to stop at a stop sign and brake lights/turn signals required.
