BCSD honors Abella for becoming a Gates Scholar

>> EDUCATION

Baldwin High School senior Elaine Abella won the prestigious Gates Scholarship, breaking new ground for her future. The Gates Scholarship Program was launched in 2017 by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and is a highly selective, last-dollar scholarship for minority high school seniors from low-income households.

Scholars who are chosen for this highly sought-after award must have an outstanding academic record in high school and be in the top 10% of their graduating class, demonstrate leadership ability, and demonstrate exceptional personal success skills. This year, only 750 scholars were selected out of a staggering 51,000 applicants from around the country. Scholars accepted will receive funding for the full cost of attendance to their chosen university or college that is not already covered by other financial aid and expected family contributions.

Abella has been a part of the Baldwin County School District since kindergarten, and her hard work and dedication have paid off in a big way.

She is the valedictorian of the 2023 graduating class and tied with Xuan Yang for the highest SAT scores in Baldwin. Abella has truly distinguished herself as a top-performing student and winning this year’s STAR Student Award is just further proof of her academic excellence.

Elaine is a shining example of what can be accomplished through hard work, dedication, and a commitment to excellence. The Baldwin County School District is very proud of her accomplishments and excited to see all that she will achieve in the future.

Congratulations to Elaine Abella on this outstanding achievement!
