GCSU women conquer Clayton State in second-half comeback

>> GEORGIA COLLEGE

Georgia College & State University womens’ basketball (11-7, 3-5 PBC) seems to have found its rhythm after a tough start upon returning from winter break. The visiting Bobcats picked up their third conference win by stunning Clayton State University (8-9, 3-5 PBC) 60-58 with a last-second layup.

Like most contests for the GCSU offense, the first quarter showed some hot hands for Bobcat shooters as they banked 14 points and to trail the Lakers only by one point. Despite not taking the first-quarter lead, Georgia College led the shooting percentages in all categories, including an impressive 3-for-4 from the free throw line.

The Bobcats outshot the Lakers from field-goal range 41.67% to 37.5%.

The second quarter, however, clearly favored CSU as they scored 18 points to the Bobcats’ six.

GCSU came out of the half strong against Clayton State scoring 18 points to their eight in the third quarter. The Bobcats took advantage of their opportunities from the free-throw line as they went 7-for-10 as a squad.

The contest got interesting going into the final quarter as the game was knotted up at 40. Both Georgia College and Clayton State had found their rhythm as they both netted more than 15 points apiece to finish the game. Bobcat Ashyia Willis got the inbound from Myra Strickland and drove to the basket to make the last-second layup that put the Bobcats on top.

Redshirt senior Harper Vick and sophomore Alexa led the scoring effort for the Bobcat offense with 10 points apiece. Vick took advantage of the free opportunities as she went 6-for-8 from the free-throw line for more than half of her points. Geary also did some damage from the stripe going 3-for-3 while also adding three field goals to her effort.

Strickland was the thirdleading scorer for GCSU and netted eight points.

Norcross post player Jada Warren wreaked havoc under the baskets as Georgia College’s leading rebounder. She corralled nine rebounds with five coming under the Laker basket and four keeping the ball in the hands of her Bobcats. Vick served as the team’s second-leading rebounder with eight.

She had four coming under each basket. Rose Bone rounded out the leading rebounders with seven, including the final rebound of the game to give the Bobcats possession after two CSU missed free throws.

The Bobcats will play another weekend contest Jan. 28 at the Centennial Center against Columbus State University at 1:30 p.m. Live stats and broadcast links will be available at GCBobcats.com.
