Georgia College & State University women’s basketball (8-3, 1-1 PBC) took a tough 70-65 loss to a fast-paced Savannah State University (8-2, 3-1 SIAC) offense before the winter break.
Buckets dropped left and right in the first quarter with 45 points scored between both squads. The Tigers took the early 25-20 lead, but the hot hands of the Bobcats took over in the second quarter, outscoring SSU 17-12 to tie the game at 39 apiece going into the half.
GCSU stayed hot, outscoring SSU in the third quarter, too, as the Bobcats put up 14 points to 11 for the Tigers, giving the blue and green a 51-48 lead entering the final quarter.
But SSU had a sharpshooting final quarter, knocking down 22 points to GCSU’s 14 to put the game back in their favor with the 70-65 final.
Calhoun, GA’s Alexa Geary highlighted the Bobcat offense with a squad-leading 25 points, just one point away from her career high. Geary shot 4-for-9 from behind the arc and an impressive 7-for-8 from the freethrow stripe to account for 19 of her total points.
Winthrop University transfer standout Myra Strickland, from Duluth, was the second-leading scorer for the Bobcats with 15 points. Like Geary, she scored most of her points from beyond the three-point arc, going 3-for-6, and was the leading scorer off the Bobcats’ bench.
Veteran red-shirt senior Harper Vick, from Marietta, rounded out the double-digit scorers for the Bobcats by knocking down 11 points. Vick shot for 50 percent from behind the arc, contributing to her 5-for-8 performance from fieldgoal range.
No GCSU players reached double-digit rebounds on the night, but three had five to their credit. Geary was the top defensive rebounder with all five of hers’ coming under the opposing basket. GCSU’s big post players, Dashaun Jackson, from Miramar, Fla. (the lone non-Georgian on the roster), and Jada Warren from Norcross, were the other two Bobcats with five rebounds apiece.
Jackson also put up six points, going 3-for-5 from field-goal range.
The Bobcats suit up for their last game of the year Dec. 29, at home in the Centennial Center against the University of Auburn at Montgomery.
