Walmart crime
Dear editor: Recently, I was witness to theft at our local Walmart. A woman stole several items including what appeared to be a large vacuum. A Walmart employee followed the thief out of the store letting all know that a theft was in progress.
The thief got to her car and left going the wrong way against traffic from Walmart.
I returned to the store and witnessed the same Walmart employee, who followed the thief from the store, encouraging store security to take positive action about the theft. The store security person appeared to be nonchalant and uninterested. A person offered pictures of the thief and the car she left in. Walmart staff seemed uninterested.
I acknowledge Walmart obviously can make their own decisions about their losses from theft. But they must not contribute to crime in our community.
Regularly we all see news stories about large scale theft in other communities.
That must not happen in our community. Our local law enforcement organizations protect us from crime. Our businesses and citizens must participate in the process to protect our community from thieves and criminals. Businesses that look the other way about thieves are encouraging crime in our community.
Just because a business is a national brand does not mean they should be immune from being a responsible local business that actively discourages crime.
Shame on our Walmart if they do not actively provide information to our local law enforcement about a crime that was observed and documented. What is the next criminal act of that arrogant thief?
Sincerely, Henry R Craig Baldwin County Commissioner
