According to a police report, law enforcement was on patrol traveling north on North Columbia Street July 15 when an officer was alerted by the Automated License Plate Recognition System (ALPR) of an expired tag on their rear facing camera. The officer verified that the vehicle’s tag was expired and canceled and then conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle in the area of North Columbia Street and Log Cabin Road.
While speaking with the driver, the officer detected the odor of marijuana coming from within the vehicle. The driver advised the officer that the vehicle was his mom’s and they had an argument which may have led to the cancellation of the tag. The driver identified himself as Dariaz Andrews and the front passenger identified himself as Charles Andrews Jr. When asked about the odor, the driver stated that he had been around someone who smoked marijuana earlier.
With probable cause to search the vehicle, law enforcement located a red-and-black “fanny pack.” Inside were two large bags of suspected marijuana, a smaller bag of suspected marijuana, a bag of suspected cocaine, a blue mask containing 14 suspected MDMA/ecstasy pills, several unused bags for packaging, a scale with suspected marijuana residue on it and five unspent .223 bullets. Upon this discovery, both individuals were detained.
Andrews stated he was picked up for work and had no idea who the drugs belonged to. Dariaz Andrews stated someone else must have left the drugs in the vehicle and denied any knowledge of the drugs.
Warrants were secured on both subjects for the possession of crack cocaine with intent to distribute, possession of schedule I controlled substance (MDMA/Ecstasy) with intent to distribute, and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. In addition, Dariaz Andrews was issued a citation for driving while registration was canceled.
