As the sun sets and the moon rises to its brightest point in the sky, a new monthly event is inviting the community to experience the outdoors in a different light.
Lake Oconee Outfitters is hosting its Full Moon Paddle series, a guided nighttime kayaking experience that takes place once a month through October, beginning in April.
The event is timed with the full moon cycle, allowing participants to paddle under optimal natural light.
According to Paddle Sports Manager Maddison Green, the idea behind the event is rooted in the unique atmosphere created by the full moon.
“These events are centered around the full moon because that’s when the moon is at its brightest,” Green said. “It creates a completely different experience out on the water.”
The paddle begins at the Greenway and follows a scenic route that ends near Central State Hospital, giving participants a chance to explore a stretch of Milledgeville that blends natural beauty with local history. As paddlers move along the water, the reflection of the moon creates a calm, almost surreal atmosphere.
Beyond the setting, Green emphasized the social aspect of the event as a major draw.
“It’s a super fun way for people to connect with others who have similar interests,” Green said.
Green said the event is designed to be both relaxing and social, offering a break from the typical routine of daytime activities.
Participants can expect a slower-paced paddle focused on enjoying the surroundings rather than speed or distance.
