GWVH presents annual Veterans Day Ceremony

>> VETERANS DAY

The Georgia War Veterans Home hosted its annual Veterans Day celebration Nov. 11 in front of the Vinson Building. Veterans and their family members gathered bundled in layers of patriotic attire to bear the cold front.

Though the air was nippy, the sun shined brightly and a cool breeze blew the flags during the Georgia Military College Corps of Cadets presentation of the colors, as well as a flag display courtesy of Woodmen of the World.

Executive Director of Health and Memorials for the Georgia Department of Veterans Service Russell Feagin began the ceremony with a welcome speech and served as moderator for the program’s presentations.

Sen. Rick Williams of Georgia’s District 25 led the invocation and prayer, followed by the Corps of Cadets presentation of the colors. Afterward, all in attendance were encouraged to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, led by veteran and Veterans Council President Willie Duncan.

Many raised their voices in song as Katie Futrell Grindle sang the national anthem, “America the Beautiful,” and “God Bless America.”

“I encourage all citizens to join in recognizing and honoring the service of our veterans through ceremonies, expressions of thanks, and acts of service,” said Baldwin County Commission Chairman Andrew Strickland as he spoke for the proclamation.

“This home stands as more than a residence. It is a living testament to service, sacrifice and enduring honor. The Georgia War Veterans Home reminds us that the gratitude of a nation must never waver,” added GMC President Maj. Gen. Terrence J. McKendrick, who served 35 years in the U.S. Army and was the keynote speaker.

The veterans then participated in a veterans platoon, where those in the crowd cheered and waved flags to show their thanks.

A benediction was led by Duncan, who earlier led the Pledge of Allegiance. During the benediction, Duncan stated in prayer, “I appreciate everybody who came to see us this day, Lord, and we appreciate everything you have allowed us to do today.”

Prior to the event, music played and those in attendance mingled, many taking time to give personal thanks to veterans for their service, while GMC Prep School students handed out Veterans Day cards that were hand-drawn by students.

Following the ceremony, the crowd moved inside to enjoy a lunch prepared by volunteers from Georgia Power and served by volunteers from Family Hospice.
