GCSU falls to Lander in Sun Belt Conference matchup

Georgia College & State University men’s basketball took on a well-rounded Lander University Jan. 21 in a Sun Belt Conference marquee matchup and fell 93-81 after a secondhalf surge by the Bearcats.

GCSU opened the game with quick energy and sharp shooting, jumping ahead 14-7 as senior Oscar Lynch sparked the offense with five of the Bobcats’ first seven points. The Bobcats hit six of their first 10 shots from the field and went 2-for-2 from 3-point range to set the tone.

Early in the second quarter, Georgia College extended its advantage to 22-14, fueled by hustle on the glass. The Bobcats owned a 5-1 edge on offensive rebounds at that point and also received a boost from the bench, which produced nine early points to keep the home team in rhythm.

Lander refused to fade, however. The Bearcats answered with a run to cut the deficit to 32-27 with 5:14 remaining in the first half, closing the gap as GCSU’s momentum began to slow.

At halftime, Georgia College held a 43-37 lead after setting the pace early and maintaining control for most of the opening 20 minutes. The Bobcats’ fast start included an early 10-2 burst, and they sustained their advantage for 18 minutes of the half largely because of their rebounding dominance, beating the Bearcats 10-1 during that stretch.

Despite trailing, Lander stayed close by shooting 60% from the floor in the first half.

Kahil Green and Tony Carpio provided efficient scoring support for GCSU, each posting nine points before the break. Carpio also knocked down three of four shots from beyond the arc, helping the Bobcats build separation when Lander threatened to close the gap.

Lynch’s performance also provided a notable lift for GCSU, as he entered the game averaging 5.1 points per contest through 14 games.

The second half shifted quickly as Lander applied pressure and found its offensive groove. The Bearcats took their first lead of the night, 50-49, at the 15-minute mark. Lander poured in 56 points in the second half, turning a six-point halftime deficit into a 12-point road win.

Georgia College fought to keep pace behind sophomore guard C.J. Jones, who led the Bobcats with 19 points. Carpio added 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds in a strong effort for GCSU, and Lynch finished the game with 13 points.

However, the Bearcats’ balanced scoring and perimeter shooting proved to be too much for GCSU to handle down the stretch.

In the final 20 minutes, Lander’s Greyson Pritzl buried five 3-pointers to push the Bearcats ahead during key possessions. His shooting surge helped Lander to pull away as Georgia College struggled to generate enough stops late in the game.

With the loss, Georgia College dropped to 11-7 overall and 6-4 in Sun Belt play. Lander remained in first place in the conference standings, improving to 8-2 in league play.
