Shoplifter charged with felony shoplifting
On. Sept. 18, law enforcement was dispatched to The Market, 821 N. Columbia St., in reference to shoplifting. A manager stated a male stole a yellow Beat Box alcoholic beverage valued at $3.99 and left in a grey Ford Focus, which law enforcement determined was registered to 70-year-old Gerald Wayne Toines. The manager showed surveillance footage of Toines placing a singular alcoholic beverage in his pants and walking away from the cooler and not returning. When confronted, Toines got in his vehicle and drove away. That night, an officer saw a matching vehicle at 221 North Lincoln Street at Riverbend Apartments. An officer recognized the male in the driver seat as the same male seen on the surveillance footage. The driver confirmed he was Gerald Toines. He told the officer he left the beverage on a shelf and then said it was in the cooler. A criminal history check of Toines showed Toines had more than three previous convictions of theft by shoplifting and was charged with felony shoplifting.
Baldwin employee truck damaged by log trailer
On Sept. 19, law enforcement was dispatched to 243 Stembridge Rd. in reference to a hit and run. The victim stated he had been driving a white 2017 International 4000 SERIES 43 Baldwin County work truck. He had just exited the round-about on Kings Road, and was traveling south on Stembridge Road, when a navy-blue semi-tractor pulling an empty log trailer approached him from the opposite direction at a high rate of speed. The tractor crossed the center line and the tractor’s left side mirror struck the Baldwin County truck’s left side mirror, causing the mirror to slap into the side door window. The mirror and the window shattered. The log truck continued towards the round-about without stopping. A search of the Flock camera systems in the surrounding area before and after the incident did not return any matching results. The offender vehicle and driver have not been located or identified.
Moving employee steals $200 On Sept. 19, law enforcement was called in reference to a theft.
William Kalsbeek had taken $200 in currency and a credit card from Patricia Ivy’s purse when helping her move. The complainant stated he told his workers and Kalsbeek to meet him at Century Bank, at 141 S.
Wayne St., to ask about the money being taken.
Kalsbeek handed him the $200 but denied having the credit card. The complainant grabbed Kalsbeek’s wallet and found the credit card inside. Ivy corroborated the complainant’s statement about her money and credit card being taken out of her purse.
Kalsbeek stated he knew he made a mistake while being escorted to the patrol car. A warrant was sworn against Kalsbeek for theft by taking.
Man arrested for DUI
On Sept. 20, law enforcement was dispatched to Childre Chevrolet, at 2710 N.
Columbia St., in reference to a suspicious vehicle in the driveway. The vehicle had parked in the parking lot of the dealership and was sitting there for over an hour. Keon Freeman was asleep in the driver’s seat of his black in color 2019 Cadillac CT6. The driver’s door was already open and the vehicle was turned off. The smell of an unknown alcoholic beverage was coming from within the vehicle.
After a brief amount of time, Freeman woke up. When asked where he was coming from, Freeman only stated he was on the way to his residence. Freeman continued to appear to fall asleep multiple times and was slurring his words. Freeman stepped out of the vehicle, where an officer observed him have trouble standing upright without using his vehicle for balance. Keon refused Standardized Field Sobriety Testing. A red SOLO cup was found in his cup holder with an unknown liquid. Freeman was transported to the jail and received citations for driving under the influence and open container.
BCSO retrieves drugs during traffic stop On Sept. 21, law enforcement was patrolling the area of Coombs Avenue and McKinley Street when an officer spotted a Chevrolet pickup truck without functioning brake lights.
The driver pulled into H&H Deli, at 1441 Vinson Highway, and officers identified the driver as Johnny Ramage and the passenger as Richard Mills. While standing at the driver’s door, the officer smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. They also noticed an open alcoholic beverage on the center floorboard area between Ramage and Mills. Ramage stated he had smoked marijuana about an hour before but there was nothing in the vehicle. When asked, Ramage consented to a search of the truck. A deputy conducted a Standardized Field Sobriety Testing of Ramage and confirmed he was safe to drive. While talking with Ramage, an officer continued to smell an overwhelming odor of marijuana coming from his person. Ramage stated he had a small amount of marijuana in his sock. Officers located two small bags in his socks. One bag contained suspected crack cocaine and the other bag contained suspected methamphetamine. Mills was issued a citation for an open container and released from the scene. Ramage was charged with possession of cocaine, possession of methamphetamine, and possession of marijuana less than an ounce.
BCSO stops drunk driver
On Sept. 21, law enforcement was patrolling the 400 block of West Montgomery Street when they observed a red 2012 Honda Civic with no operable tag lights.
The driver, Elijah Dominguez, smelled of an odor of an unknown alcoholic beverage. Dominguez stated he had consumed approximately one beer the day prior. Dominguez consented to a Standardized Field Sobriety Tests and was determined impaired. Dominguez also provided a breath sample on the portable breath test indicating a breath alcohol concentration over the legal limit to drive. At the sheriff’s office, Dominguez indicated a breath alcohol content of 0.151 with no errors indicated.
