Skyla Morris BCAS hosts successful animal adoption

Baldwin County Animal Services (BCAS) hosted its first adoption event Feb. 15 with the Baldwin County Board of Commissioners at the animal services' location on 1395 Orchard Hill Rd.

“We typically don't have the shelter open on Saturdays,” said Brianna Marshburn, BCAS office manager and adoption coordinator. “We were there pretty much regular working hours, when [visitors] could come and see what animals we had available.”

For this special adoption event, the organization specifically encouraged adoptions for animals that had been at the shelter for more than a year. Because of an anonymous donation to the shelter, adoption fees for these animals was reduced to just $25.

Marshburn credits the anonymous donation for making the event possible and helping reduce the adoption fees for the more urgent animals in the shelter.

“The $25 adoption fee would cover their rabies and getting their shots up to date because those animals should already be spayed and neutered.”

According to Marshburn, the shelter had two rooms open to the public to showcase the animals in urgent need of homes. The shelter placed five dogs and roughly 20 cats for the event under the $25 adoption fee.

“We mostly got cats out [of the shelter],” Marshburn said. “We had seven [animals] adopted, and a few are pending.”

Despite a good turnout for the event, several of the shelter’s sponsored animals were not adopted during the occasion. The specific animals are, therefore, still listed under the $25 adoption fee due to the funds covered by the anonymous donation.

Before the pet adoption event, the Baldwin County Board of Commissioners Facebook page shared photos of 19 cats and 11 dogs available for adoption from the shelter.

The shelter is still looking for homes for many listed animals, including a five-year-old Pitbull mix, Muffin, and a fiveyear- old tabby cat, Laura.

Marshburn believes the event was a success, and she looks forward to hosting similar events.

“I hope that in the future, I'll be able to do this sort of thing monthly and put-up ads at PetSmart,” said Marshburn. “Other than that, it’s just by word of mouth and sharing on social media.”
