The Baldwin girl’s basketball team won over 25 games last year but has had its ups and downs since the start of this season.
The Bravettes began their schedule with a tough non-region slate of away games that prepared them for good competition.
During the Christmas break, head coach Kizzy Walker had her team play in a tournament at Carrollton High School to challenge them even more.
The Bravettes went 1-1 in their two games, with both contests being played all four quarters. Baldwin was able to defeat Stockbridge 50-43 on Dec. 19 but was unable to surpass Campbell in the team’s 60-56 overtime loss the day after.
Though they currently have a losing record, the Bravettes know it’s not indicative of their talent level.
Walker’s squad still ranks inside the top 15 Class 4A teams in the state and has yet to lose a game on their home court. This is important to the Bravettes, especially with the bulk of their region schedule coming up.
Four of Baldwin’s next five games are against region opponents, one of those being Griffin last Tuesday and the other being Westside.
The Bravettes lost that game to the Bears 53-52, which marked their first region loss since the 2019-20 season. Given the program’s historical success, Baldwin will try to get back on track during the other three region matchups in the next couple weeks.
Ultimately, Walker’s team is about to have a stretch of home games which will benefit the girls. Not only have they not lost at home yet this season, but the Bravettes are scoring almost 20 points more at home than when they’re on the road.
Five of their next seven will be played in Baldwin’s gymnasium, so Walker and company hope to feed off that home energy and get back above .500 by the end of the month.
