CHANGE STARTS HERE:

GCSU MIRACLE IS CHANGING KIDS HEALTH ONE DONATION AT A TIME

Students, faculty and community members filled the room with energy, music and purpose Saturday as Georgia College Miracle hosted its annual Thunderthon — an eight-hour dance marathon dedicated to raising money for children receiving care at Beverly Knight Olson Children’s Hospital in Macon.

Throughout the day, participants remained on their feet, learning a new minute of choreographed dance at the top of every hour — a tradition that symbolizes both endurance and unity in support of the cause. But Thunderthon is about more than dancing — it’s about making a difference.

This year, the organization raised $78,276.44, all of which will go toward supporting patients and families at the children’s hospital.

Beyond the dance floor, the event offered a variety of activities designed to engage participants and families alike. Attendees could be seen making slime, jumping in bounce houses and connecting with Miracle families who shared personal stories about their experiences with the hospital.

For many, those moments were the most impactful.

“Getting to hear directly from the families reminds us why we’re here,” said Executive Director Hailey Zerkle. “Every dollar we raise goes toward making their lives a little easier, and Thunderthon is a celebration of that mission.”

The presence of the children and their families served as a powerful reminder of the real lives impacted by the fundraising efforts. Their stories brought meaning to each hour of dancing, reinforcing the purpose behind every step.

Executive Director Liliah Gapp emphasized the dedication it takes to make Thunderthon a success.

“This event represents months of hard work from our team and the incredible support of this campus,” Gapp said. “Seeing everyone come together for the kids is what makes it all worth it.”

Georgia College Miracle is part of the national Children’s Miracle Network Dance Marathon movement, which raises funds year-round for local children’s hospitals. Thunderthon serves as the organization’s largest annual fundraising event and a culmination of those efforts.

For those involved, Thunderthon is more than just an event — it’s a movement fueled by compassion, community and a commitment to making a difference, one step at a time.
