Milledgeville and Baldwin County residents came together this Earth Day to celebrate and protect the local environment.
Keep Milledgeville Baldwin Beautiful (KMBB), a local affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, is spearheading efforts to engage the community in meaningful environmental action.
KMBB expanded its Adopta- Road program, encouraging local organizations and individuals to take responsibility for keeping specific roadways clean. The Rotary Club adopted the eastern part of Meriwether Road, and realtor Kay McGibony adopted Log Cabin Road from the new Publix shopping center to John Milledge Academy.
Participants commit to quarterly cleanups, with KMBB providing necessary supplies.
“KMBB is something a lot of people fall in line with and can get behind. Most of it is just making sure Baldwin County and Milledgeville is free from litter,” said Jeffery Wells, chairman of the KMBB board of directors. “It has an economic effect because people and businesses won’t move to a place that looks trashy. We as citizens can’t just hang back and let the government do the work. Doing things like that we can look back and say we did our part and that’s why I got involved.”
The Milledgeville community hosted a variety of Earth Week events including a Lake Sinclair clean up, Greenway Day, and a host of Earth Day clean-up teams. Lake Sinclair’s John Paige Scarborough is one of the locals taking initiative in keeping his neighborhood beautiful.
“I think it is important for us to come together as a community and help keep our town clean, not just on Earth Day but every day. At the end of the day we only get one planet,” Scarborough said Georgia College’s Environmental Science Club hosted Earth Fest on the main campus allowing students and the community to join in the celebration of Earth Day and learn more about the cause.
In addition, approximately 125 local volunteers joined forces with over 200 cadets from Georgia Military College and students from Georgia College & State University to remove litter from various areas, including Huley Park, Bone Cemetery, Memory Hill Cemetery, and downtown Milledgeville. This collaborative effort highlighted the community’s dedication to maintaining a clean and beautiful environment.
KMBB invites all residents to participate in ongoing environmental initiatives. Whether through joining cleanup events, adopting a road, or spreading awareness, every action contributes to a healthier community.
