The New Year brings new beginnings and new possibilities. As the clock struck midnight on Jan. 1, residents of Milledgeville rang in the new year with fresh goals and resolutions. The community’s determination to start 2025 on the right foot has created a surge in activity in local businesses.
One of the most common New Year’s resolutions each year is to get healthier, and Milledgeville’s fitness industry is reaping the benefits. Fitness centers like Harmony Yoga and BodyPlex have reported an influx of new memberships and class attendance.
“January is definitely our biggest month for class attendance. People are motivated to start the year strong, and we see a noticeable uptick in new memberships and class enrollments,' said Rachel Kempskii, Harmony Yoga instructor.
BodyPlex employee Glen Flemming also commented on the influx of people in their gym.
“The last few weeks have been packed, I have seen a ton of new faces and it's really inspiring to see people trying to better themselves in the new year.” Fleming said Fitness centers aren’t the only businesses benefiting. Food stores and restaurants reported increased traffic. Businesses in downtown Milledgeville, like the Brick, have seen customers ordering different options since the new year.
“More people have been ordering some of our healthier options like salads off the menu,” Brick server Olivia Rasmey said.
Residents who prioritize wanting to be more service driven this year are creating ripple effects throughout the community. Many students and locals are finding new ways to serve through local organizations or donations.
'We notice that we get a ton of donations as well as just a general interest for the cause in January and throughout the holiday season, ' said Abigail Lee, director of Georgia College Miracle Network.
For many students, the new year also brings new academic goals.
“The library has been packed recently, with a new semester underway there are a lot more people determined to get off to a good start in their classes. My personal goal this year is to get all A’s and judging by the library I think a lot of other people have the same goal,” said Georgia College senior Sarah Trask.
As 2025 begins, Milledgeville businesses are optimistic about the year ahead, fueled by the drive and determination of residents eager to turn resolutions into realities. From fitness to academics to service, the spirit of renewal is not only changing lives but also strengthening the city’s economic foundation.
