GWVH seeks partners for Friend-a-Vet program

The Georgia War Veterans Home (GWVH) is introducing the Frienda- Vet program.

Inspired by the Adopta- Vet program run nationwide by the Elks Lodge, the Friend-a-Vet program will allow veteran residents in the home to have more one-on-one interaction with the public.

“The Elks Lodge has been a longtime partner with us and inquired if we had a similar program. Through some discussion and evaluation, we created the Friend-a-Vet program in hopes of further connecting our veterans with the community,” said Michelle Flood, activities director for GWVH.

The program is in its beginning stages and the GWVH is currently gauging interest with the community. Community members may apply to join and if approved, Flood will offer the applicant a tour of the facility and the individual will be able to pick the veteran they would like to befriend. Family members cannot be befriended through the program.

“The program will begin with a focus on our veterans who are unable to engage in events, have less family contact, or may be bedridden or immobile,” said Flood. “Each friend will able to interact with the veteran closely and be a part of their regular routine.”

The goal of the program is to offer more social opportunities to veterans that cannot actively engage with visitors, family, or the community. In addition, the GWVH hopes to increase socialization of the veterans with new people as studies have shown that it boosts behavior, overall mood, and quality of life.

“Research shows that when older adults interact with others outside of a family unit, they tend to show less depression and negative sentiments,” said Flood. “Research has also shown that more socialization may have an effect on longer lifespans. Overall, it provides a positive enrichment and benefit.”

Joining the program does not require a cost, though friends may bring gifts, cards, and engage with the veteran on special occasions if they feel called to. In addition, friends will have the option to attend events with the veteran and become more actively involved with the GWVH community.

“We hope to get enough interest to expand the program to more veterans over time,” said Flood. “Our veterans appreciate interaction with the community and this is a new opportunity to get to know a veteran personally and impact their life.”
