One game mattered; the other, not so much. Georgia College & State University (4-8) took a tough 72-59 loss in men’s basketball Dec. 15, after hosting the University of West Florida on Education Day.
The mid-week contest against UWF was a tough one for the Bobcats after they banked 28 points in the opening half for a two-point lead. The Argonauts of West Florida came out of the dressing room with a new game plan and a hot offense, though, knocking down 46 points to the blue and greens’ 31 over the final two quarters to reach the 72-59 final.
This was a low-scoring game for GCSU, as they had only two double-digit scorers and two shooters with nine points. Christian Koneman led the Bobcats with an impressive 17-point performance after going 5-for-8 from field-goal range, including 2-for-4 from behind the three-point arc. The Chatsworth native also added five points to his total with a 5-for-7 result from the freethrow stripe.
Dawsonville’s Luke Chism was the second-leading scorer for GCSU with 10 points, while Brendan Rigsbee and Zyair Greene put up nine points apiece to round out the Bobcats’ leading scorers.
GCSU also had a tough time in the rebounding effort under the basket against UWF.
Koneman led the Bobcats’ rebounding with seven, most of which came under the Argo’s basket. Chism had the second-most rebounds with five, most of them on the defensive side as well.
The Bobcats moved into the weekend to take on Kennesaw State University Dec. 17, in a Division I exhibition contest, the second exhibition game for the team this season.
GCSU was outscored 79-55.
This time, Rigsbee and Warner Robins native Austin Sloan led the scoring, with Rigsbee totaling 15 points after going 4-for-9 from field-goal range and 6-for-8 from the free-throw stripe.
Meanwhile, Sloan nabbed his second double-double of the season, icing 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Sloan was the leading rebounder for the Bobcats, too, as he nabbed all 10 of his rebounds under the KSU basket. Chism added eight rebounds as the team’s second-leading rebounder, with most of his rebounds coming under the Owl’s basket, too.
After a brief winter break, the Bobcats men’s team suits up Dec. 29, for a 4 p.m. tipoff in the Centennial Center against the University of Auburn at Montgomery. Live stats and broadcast links for both games will be available at GCBobcats.com.
