Georgia College & State University women’s basketball sits at an 8-2 overall record and 1-1 in Peach Belt Conference (PBC) play.
On Dec. 10, the Bobcats played their first game of the PBC season and picked up a 55-46 road win over Young Harris College. GCSU was outscored in the first quarter by a two-point margin as they kicked off the second quarter down 14-12. The blue and green got defensive and limited the Mountain Lions to three second-quarter points. The offense for Georgia College got hot at the right time as they netted 17 points going into half time up 29-17.
Coming out of half time, YHC found their shooting rhythm again and outscored the Bobcats 16-11 in the third quarter. Entering the fourth quarter the Bobcats held on to the lead at 40-33. By the end of the game, the Bobcats came out on top 55-46 as they only trailed after one quarter of play.
The Georgia College offense solidified the win with three doubledigit scorers were in the starting five. Alexa Geary led the charge, icing 17 points on the night to lead the squad.
Fifteen of her points came from behind the arc as she shot for 50 percent in the threepoint range. Ashyia Willis solidified 15 points as the second leading scorer. Willis shot 50 percent inside field goal range and made three of four free-throw attempts. Harper Vick rounded out the double-digit scoring, knocking down 12 points on the night. Vick shot 100 percent from the free-throw stripe and made five field goals to complete her scoring efforts.
Big post player Jada Warren nabbed doubledigit rebounds for the Bobcats and was the only one to do so. To add to an already impressive evening, Vick was the second-leading rebounder, corralling seven all of which came under the YHC basket.
She also rounded out her box score, leading the team in blocked shots with two. Myra Strickland rounded out the leading rebounders with five and netted five points on the night.
The Bobcats moved further into conference play with another road match to face the No.
14 nationally ranked University of North Georgia. The Bobcats played hard, only being outscored by two points when the final horn sounded at 56-54. GCSU was outscored by more than one point in the first quarter at 16-14.
Going into halftime, the Bobcats put up 15 points to the Nighthawks 14 second quarter points to trailing 30-29.
The one-point deficit remained after the third quarter with both squads dropping 14 points.
The Bobcats were in the game until the final horn sounded as the Nighthawks outscored GCSU 12-11 in the final quarter of play for the final score of 56-54.
Despite the loss, the Bobcat offense still had the hot hands with three double-digit scorers. Vick led the scoring with 14 points as she banked six field goals, all from inside the three-point line.
Strickland came off the bench and iced 12 points as the second-leading scorer. Strickland shot 50 percent from field goal range, including two three-point buckets.
Willis rounded out the double-digit scoring with 10 points.
Geary led the rebounding effort with 11 rebounds and added eight points to her box score. This was the first contest in the 10-game season that she was held under 10 points and was the only Bobcat to do so. Warren added six rebounds, four of which were defensive. Dashaun Jackson and Willis added five rebounds apiece to round out the leading rebounders.
The Bobcats are back in action Dec. 19 in the Centennial Center at 1:30 p.m. as they take a break from conference play to take on No. 18 Savannah State. Live stats and broadcast links are available at GCBobcats.com.
