CURRENT DISTRICT 3 COMMISSIONER DECIDED NOT TO SEEK RE-ELECTION
There’s only one contested county commission primary this month, and it’s in District 3.
District 3 voters who choose a Republican ballot will decide between a pair of candidates – Justin Jones and Danny Register. District 3’s current county commissioner, Sammy Hall, decided not to seek re-election earlier this year. Hall has represented District 3 off-and-on for more than 50 years. He first served from 1974-1992. He then made his political comeback in 2008 and has represented District 3 ever since.
The Jones/Register winner will advance to take on Democrat Peggy Longino in the November general election.
District 3 includes the far southwestern corners of Baldwin County, but it also includes the heart of downtown Milledgeville. In other words, you can see campaign signs on County Line Church Road, but you can also see them while walking around downtown. Baldwin County’s voting map has been gerrymandered since the 1980s, all to ensure that two-out-of-the-five county commission districts are majority African-American. At last count, the Census Bureau placed Baldwin County’s African-American population at 41.7 percent.
Register is retired from the Georgia Department of Corrections, where he worked as a maintenance engineer.
Jones, meanwhile, has made his career in the jewelry business at JC Grant Company.
To the right, word-for-word, are the answers to The Baldwin Bulletin’s candidate questionnaire. Candidates had the option of writing up to 125 words for the first question and 500 words for the second question. Also, please note that the candidates submitted their answers prior to the release of the county government forensic audit and firing of County Manager Carlos Tobar.
