Gun violence resurrected over holiday weekend

Earlier this year, local law enforcement joined forces and along with the Mayor announced a new initiative to decrease gun violence in the city. However, Easter weekend was filled with violence after several gunshots fired in Milledgeville.

According to the Milledgeville Police Department, one incident occurred April 16, outside of Columbia Pub & Billiards. Once arriving, officers found Marquis Whipple behind the business. Whipple had suffered from a gunshot. He was transferred from the pool hall to medical services.

While officers were investigating the scene, three other people were brought to Atrium Navicent Health all suffering from gunshot wounds. One of the people identified was George Washington.

According to the press release, the Milledgeville Police Department believes that a dispute occurred between Whipple and Washington. The release also stated the other two victims in the shooting were just bystanders who were injured in the incident.

The next day MPD was dispatched to the area of West Mitchell Street. Officers were called in reference to gunshots in the area. Once on the scene officers found several shell casings in front of a residence located at 231 West Mitchell Street.

While investigating the crime scene, Jimekia Havior arrived at Atrium Navicent Health Baldwin with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Havior told detectives that she was shot in the West Mitchell area, but was unsure of the identity of the shooter.

The investigations for both shootings are still being investigated. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Milledgeville Police Department Detective Bureau at 478-414-4090.
