GMC LOOKS TO THE NORTH

PURCHASES ADDITIONAL PROPERTY ON HANCOCK ST.

Georgia Military College recently expanded its real estate portfolio around Milledgeville, purchasing the corner property at 241 East Hancock St. for $850,000.

The old bank building, located across from the Jets Foods store, currently is occupied by Stribling and Crockett Law. In turn, a group called Stribling Properties, LLC bought the property at 211 Roberson Mill Road for $700,000. 211 Roberson Mill Road is the abandoned office complex that neighbors the Dollar General at the corner of Roberson Mill and Ga. 22.

The Georgia Military College Foundation now owns 74 properties in Baldwin County, according to courthouse records, and 71 of those are around its main campus.

Over the last three-plus decades, GMC's expansion focused primarily to its east, around Warren Street and the old Hamp Brown Bottom neighborhood, as well to its south, along Franklin Street and South Jefferson Street.

More recently, though, GMC purchased multiple parcels just north of campus to make way for the 28,000-square-foot NewDay USA Center for Leadership, which now houses the school's fine arts program. The NewDay USA Center includes an 820-seat theater, complete with state-of-the-art acoustics, rigging systems and an orchestra pit.

GMC valued the property at 24 East Hancock St. due to “its proximity to the Center of Leadership and other key campus assets,” according to Jobie Shields, the school's associate vice president of communications and government affairs.

“The location presents a variety of potential uses that could enhance both the student experience and GMC’s engagement with the broader community,” she said. “No final decisions have been made, and we will continue to evaluate options that align with our strategic priorities and commitment to serving our students, faculty, and community partners.”
