On May 9, Milledgeville City Council heard a presentation of awards to Milledgeville Main Street’s junior board, completed the first reading for three ordinances, including the first draft of the 2024 fiscal year budget, and passed three ordinances.
To begin the meeting, City Clerk Bo Danuser read the proclamation for Georgia Cities Week. Georgia Cities Week took place April 23-29 and celebrates Georgia’s cities and the services they offer. Director of Milledgeville Main Street and the Downtown Development Authority Carlee Schulte planned a range of events to celebrate Milledgeville during those dates.
“This proclamation was on the agenda for the April 25 meeting that was canceled but, even though the week is over, we wanted our participation to be noted along with other statewide events that took place,” said Milledgeville Mayor Mary Parham-Copelan.
Schulte came forward after the reading of the proclamation to honor the inaugural Milledgeville Main Street Junior Board, which helped plan Georgia Cities Week events and other events for Milledgeville. Eleven board members were awarded pins and certificates for their service. Of the board members, two were from Georgia College Early College, three were from Baldwin High School, three were from John Milledge Academy, and three were from Georgia Military College Preparatory School.
“Tonight, we celebrate some wonderful students and recognize Amanda Greene who was an integral part of managing and starting our first junior board,” Schulte said. “The purpose of forming this board was to reach a population of future community leaders to engage them in local fundraising experiences and realworld volunteer opportunities. This board gave these students the opportunity to meet each other, meet local business owners, and learn more about their hometown.”
Moving into new business, the council completed the first reading of the FY2024 Annual Operating Budget. After the first reading a public hearing was conducted to give attendees a chance to offer their opinions or remarks on the publicly posted draft. No one spoke during the hearing, and Parham-Copelan remarked that the final reading is planned for the June 13 city council meeting.
First readings were also conducted for two ordinances moved onto the agenda from the cancellation of the April 25 meeting. The first ordinance requested to amend the land development code to rezone 1010 North Wilkinson Street from SFR1 to MR2. The second ordinance requested amending the Land Development Code to rezone 1939 North Jefferson Street from MR2 to CC. Due to the cancellation of the last meeting, rather than being assigned to the Planning and Zoning Committee, Parham-Copelan informed the council that the Planning and Zoning Committee will make its decision during the public hearing and final reading of the ordinances.
The meeting concluded with the approval of three ordinances moved over from the April 25 agenda.
The council unanimously approved a resolution to authorize the city of Milledgeville to apply for a 2023 Community Development Block (CDBG) Grant to improve the water lines in the Milledgeville Estates mobile home park consisting of Lewis Court and Moore Street.
They unanimously approved a resolution to authorize an agreement with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) to move water and sewer lines on State Route 29 associated with the GDOT replacement of the bridge that crosses Fishing Creek.
They unanimously approved a resolution to authorize an agreement with ClearCourse to provide transportation enhancement reports and approved a request for bids for the installation of rectangular rapid flashing beacons at five intersections in the direct vicinity of downtown Milledgeville.
The next city council meeting is set for April 23 at 6:30 p.m. on the second floor of Milledgeville City Hall.
