BOC honors 12 Youth Softball Allstars Championship Team; Juneteenth

The Baldwin County Board of Commissioners hosted its final meeting of the month to honor three 100th birthdays, a championship win, and the Juneteenth celebration.

Commissioner Emily Davis honored Lottie Mae Stevens Harris, Annie Bell Wright Milner, and Thelma Clemmons Huff with Certificates of Recognition for their 100th birthdays.

“To highlight the lives of individuals as this community celebrates their 100th birthdays…and to call upon the citizens of Milledgeville and Baldwin County to rejoice in their presence in our community, reflect on their long lives full of achievements and acknowledgment continuing the celebration they make to enrich our beloved community,” said Davis.

Commission Chair Andrew Stickland recognized the young ladies of the Baldwin County Recreation Department 12 Youth Allstars Championship Team with a Certificate of Recognition.

“The Baldwin 12 Youth Softball Allstars won not only the district championship but remained undefeated through the state championship,” said Strickland. “These girls are the best around…I’m very proud of you and you earned it. You are resilient.”

The team will be traveling to Alabama in July to play in the world series.

“As you go forward, you not only represent Baldwin County but our great state of Georgia. We are expecting you to be kind, respectful, and play your heart out,” said Strickland.

Vice Chairman Kendrick Butts read a proclamation for the Juneteenth celebration. Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce the freedom of enslaved African Americans.

“As Juneteenth stands as a solemn and joyous occasion to honor the strength, resilience, and cultural contributions of Black Americans and to reflect on the enduring struggles for freedom, dignity, and equality,” said Butts. “The Harrisburg Collaborative recognized the importance of remembering our shared history not as a distant past but as a living call to unity, understanding, and social progress.”

In other matters, the commissioners unanimously approved a resolution to adopt the 2026 Fiscal Year Superior Court Annual Operating Budget for the period of July 1, 2025 - July 30, 2026. It is a circuit budget including eight counties.

Commissioners unanimously authorized an agreement with Watkins and Associates, LLC to provide professional engineering and design services for Oconee Heights streetscape and safety improvements. The project will include building three bridges, rehabilitating the streets, converting some streets to one-way streets, and installing about a million dollars worth of streetlights. Construction is expected to begin next year.

“It will have a great impact,” said Butts.

The meeting concluded with 10 individuals being appointed to the Airport Advisory Council, after discussion by the board.
