Georgia College & State University’s (GCSU) Department of Theatre and Dance has opened registration for its Spring Community Dance Program.
The program is open for ages 3 and up with classes for children and adults. This spring, classes include Ballet I-VIII, Tap I-III, Contemporary Dance, Creative Movement, Jazz I & Hip Hop I, Jazz II & Hip Hop II, Musical Theatre Dance, Private Lessons, Tap IV, and Costumes. Tuition is $50 per class and community members may register for two or more dance classes at once to receive 10% off with a promo code featured on the registration website.
“Our program offers a class for everyone. We don’t discriminate,” said Amelia Pelton, founder and director of the Community Dance Program. “This is a chance for the community to experience dance and participate in professional shows.”
Twenty-nine years ago, Peloton started the program with about 40 dancers in the first year. Since then, it has grown to include about 150 dancers of various ages. Each dancer is considered a part of the program through taking at least one class and, unlike other dance programs, no application process is required.
“The program is designed so that anyone can sign up for a class and learn. There are no requirements or prerequisites to take any of the classes,” said Pelton.
During the year, members of the program will perform a Spring Dance Program in May and The Nutcracker in the fall. This year’s theme for the spring performance is ‘Love is in the Air’.
“The Nutcracker is one of Georgia College’s biggest performances of the year and recently celebrated its 27th anniversary,” said Pelton. “The Spring Dance is a professional performance as well and changes themes each year. Every member of the program is included in both shows, whether they took one class or multiple classes.”
According to Pelton, she’s heard a lot of positive feedback that helps to strengthen the program and reflect the impact it's made on the community.
“Many dance programs don’t have as many opportunities for adults or may require more to be able to join,” said Pelton. “Our Community Dance Program is a dance family and is created to be accessible and affordable. It’s been great to hear over the years how thankful many individuals are for the access to dance and to be able to see multiple generations join our program.”
Dance is a form of art built on creative expression through movement and music. It’s something that can be enjoyed by various age groups and can become something generational or unique to an individual, according to Pelton.
“Being a part of our program helps people learn a new way to express themselves, connects them with other dancers, and has also inspired multiple generations to get involved with dance. There are so many genres, styles, and different ways to be involved that make each experience unique to the student,” said Pelton.
