GMC Prep showcases talent at Capitol Art Exhibition

Two Georgia Military College Prep School (GMC Prep) students, Megan Harper and Ella Pope, were selected to participate in the Capitol Art Exhibition (CAE) as part of the National Youth Art Month celebrations.

The exhibition, which has been a longstanding tradition of the Georgia Art Education Association for over 50 years, showcases exceptional artistic talent from pre-k to college-age students across the state.

Megan and Ella’s artwork stood out among the submissions this year, earning them the honor of having their pieces displayed at the James H. “Sloppy” Floyd Building adjacent to the Capitol in Atlanta.

Their artwork, both inspired by the renowned artist Steve Penley, masterfully combines elements of realism and abstract expressionism, showcasing the depth of their creativity and skill.

GMC Prep School Middle and High School Art Teacher Paige Barlow said, “Megan and Ella were selected due to the numerous awards they won at the GMC Prep Winter art show, for their talent, and commitment in the art classes and the art club.”

The reception for the Capitol Art Exhibition took place on March 13, when senators, legislators, art teachers, administrators, students, families, and esteemed guests gathered to celebrate the achievements of Georgia's young artists. Among the distinguished attendees were Senator Rick Williams and Representative Ken Vance, who took the time to meet Megan, Ella, and their families, discuss the significance of art education, and admire the students' remarkable talents.

“We are incredibly proud of Megan Harper and Ella Pope for their outstanding achievement in being selected for the Capitol Art Exhibition,” said Col. Amy Lee, principal of Georgia Military College Prep School. “Their dedication, creativity, and passion for art are truly commendable, and it is an honor to see their work recognized at the Capitol Art Exhibit.”

The Capitol Art Exhibition will remain on display for a week, providing an opportunity for visitors to appreciate the exceptional talent of Georgia’s young artists. This event not only highlights the importance of arts education but also serves as a testament to the creativity and innovation thriving within our state's schools.
