After 37 years of distinguished service, Major General Reginald “Reg” G.A. Neal retired from the Army National Guard. A retirement ceremony was held in his honor at Georgia Military College on Aug. 16 at the NewDay USA Center of Leadership at Georgia Military College, in coordination with the Georgia Army National Guard.
Neal began his life of service at Georgia Military College in 1987 as a member of the Junior College Corps of Cadets. While balancing challenging academics, rigorous physical training, and learning the ways of a military lifestyle, Neal also worked in the cafeteria, embodying the humility and dedication that defined his military career and helped transform him into an authentic servant leader.
In 1989, he was commissioned from Georgia Military College as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army after earning two associate’s degrees, one in business administration and the other in military science, and became the first Black GMC Alumnus to earn the rank of general officer.
Neal’s education also includes a bachelor of science degree in education from Georgia Southern University, a master of science degree in educational leadership from The Citadel, and a doctorate of education administration (Ed.D) from Argosy University, along with advanced military training throughout his career.
“Major General Neal’s journey is a testament to GMC’s storied values of ‘duty, honor, country,’” said Lieutenant General William B. Caldwell, IV, USA (Ret), GMC president. “He came to GMC a very different person than when he left. He developed a passion for serving others and took that passion to every new adventure he encountered over the course of his career and in his personal life. On behalf of us all at Georgia Military College, we could not be prouder of what he represents, his numerous accomplishments, and for his exemplary service to our nation.”
Throughout his career, Neal commanded the 1st Battalion, 118th Field Artillery Regiment, and the 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, making history as the first Black American to lead the storied unit. Other key positions he has held include deputy commanding general (National Guard) for U.S. Army South, executive assistant to the chief of the National Guard Bureau at the Pentagon and most recently as deputy commanding general for U.S. Army Pacific in Hawaii. His service was honored with awards, including the Defense Superior Service Medal and the Bronze Star Medal.
