Christmas comes to Milledgeville

Last weekend, Christmas made its debut in Milledgeville with the annual tree lighting, the debut of the Milly Market and the Christmas Parade.

Downtown Milledgeville was full of life as people gathered to attend the Milly Market and watch the lighting of the Christmas tree Friday night. The market was a new addition to this annual First Friday event with over 24 vendors and was hosted by GCSU Mass Communication students Lauren Schroeder, Catherine Tanner, Meyers Ezzell and Grace Williams.

“This market is debuting this year and will continue after we graduate,” said Schroeder. “We are very proud of how it turned out and hope everyone enjoyed it.”

Alongside these festivities, businesses took part in the seasonal cheer by decorating their windows and displays. The winner won $200 in Milly Money, which is a gift certificate program for downtown businesses. In first place was Miles of Styles, second place was Eclectic and third place was Dungeons & Daiquiris.

“I recommend everyone go around this holiday season and check out these windows. All of our businesses did a splendid job,” said Carlee Schulte, Milledgeville Main Street director.

Then, on Sunday, the annual Christmas parade occurred with locals gathering along the streets. The parade began on South Elbert Street and finished at South Wilkinson Street.

“That message of peace and unity is what we are all about,” said Hank Griffeth, city manager, to the crowd. “We are one large family. Thank you all for coming.”
