It was quite the feat.
Georgia Military College Prep picked up a thrilling overtime victory last Friday night at Davenport Field, and then turned around on Tuesday and toppled Atkinson County down in South Georgia.
The Dawgs’ offense came alive on Tuesday in the 36-21 victory over Atkinson.
Contrast that to last Friday, when GMC didn’t register its first touchdown until the waning moments of the game. Regardless, it was one of the most dramatic games in recent memory at Davenport Field, with the Dawgs picking up the 12-6 win over Glenn Hills, a much larger high school from Augusta.
The Bulldogs held the Spartans out of the endzone on their firstand- only possession in overtime, and then were able to win the game with a Christopher Alexander rushing touchdown. It was one of the most emotional wins in head coach Gavin Tierce’s career, and he later called it the biggest of his career, too.
“It’s without a doubt the number-one win. I mean, the first win means a lot, obviously, but this one right here, just the way that we fought, that’s what I’m gonna remember more than anything,” Tierce said. “Our first win was kind of a lopsided game and obviously that felt good, but this one right here, this is a different kind of feeling.”
It also marked one of GMC’s most impressive performances on the defensive side of the ball in Tierce’s tenure, as the Bulldogs held the Spartans to just 116 yards of total offense. GMC dominated the ground game, gaining 284 yards rushing with just 11 total yards passing.
“Yeah, I couldn’t have asked for a better game,” Tierce said. “You take one busted coverage out of the game and it shouldn’t have been as close as it was. And that’s two really good weeks in a row for our defense. I’d love to get them off the field.
“Offensively, we’ve got a lot to figure out. But our defense, you couldn’t ask for any better than what they have played the last two weeks.”
The offense reached the endzone only once in regulation, late in the fourth quarter on a Cason Dennis rushing touchdown. The two-point conversion attempt following the score was initially called a touchdown, but was called back by a penalty. The, the extra point attempt was missed, leading to an overtime finish for the ages.
