The GMC Prep Bulldogs made a solid comefrom- behind attempt on Homecoming night last Friday against the Twiggs County Cobras but came up short in a 24-17 decision at Davenport Field in Milledgeville.
GMC Prep’s hardfought battle delivered its most points scored this year since the season opener versus Atkinson County when the team scored 16 points against the Rebels in a 35-16 loss.
The highlight of the first half for the Bulldogs was a Zac Koehler 42-yard field goal that cut the Cobras’ lead to 14-3 with 3:30 to go until halftime.
The fourth quarter saw little action, with the only score coming from a sack of Bulldogs quarterback Logan McMillan, who was brought down in the GMC endzone for a safety, extending the Cobras’ lead to 16-3.
Caleb Hinton provided the spark to begin a spirited comeback for the Bulldogs with a 38-yard touchdown run that cut Twiggs lead to 16-10.
However, the Cobras put the game on ice with a long scoring drive ending on a nine-yard run, followed by a successful two-point conversion to put Twiggs up 24-10 with just over two minutes left to play.
Playing in his first game back from injury, McMillan threw a 20-yard touchdown pass in the game’s final minute to Kolby Thompson. It marked McMillan’s first score of the season and kept the Bulldogs’ hope for a comeback alive.
Following a successful point-after kick by Koehler, the Bulldogs attempted an onside kick; however, the ball bounced the Cobras’ way to end any chance of overtime.
Despite the loss, GMC Prep saw major improvement largely due to McMillan’s return to the lineup as an experienced starter. GMC Prep hits the road this Friday to play region foe Hancock Central (2-4, 0-1) in a battle of the Bulldogs. Kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m. in Sparta.
