Although the regular baseball season has been over for some time, some members of the Georgia College baseball team have been continuing to hone their skills on the field by playing in one of the various collegiate summer leagues that take place around the country.
Outfielder Tyler Walters, a rising sophomore, was recently selected as an All-Star in the New York Collegiate Baseball League (NYCBL) as a member of the Mansfield Destroyers. Walters is currently hitting .339 with 25 RBIs and is second in the league for home runs with five. Despite Walters’ performance, the Destroyers sit at 13-26-1 on the season.
Rising junior catcher John Hale recently finished his season with the Waccamaw Naturals in the Ripken Experience Summer Collegiate League with a .367 batting average, 11 RBIs, five stolen bases and a home run to boot. The Naturals came up short in the playoffs, however, falling to the Atlantic Hurricanes in the semifinals.
Shortstop David Julien, who won the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Freshman of the Year award multiple times in the last season, has been a member of the Boone Bigfoots in the Textile League. Julien currently has a .344 batting average with 11 hits, a home run and three RBIs with the 23-10-2 team from Boone, North Carolina.
Rising sophomore infielder Dominic Arienzo played for the nearby Macon Bacon in the Coastal Plains League (CPL) and finished the season 7-for-36, tacking on a home run and seven RBIs while also scoring twice himself.
Rising sophomore left-handed pitcher Reid Robertson also played in the CPL over the summer for the Wilmington Sharks. Robertson made six relief appearances, finishing with a 1-1 record over 6 1/3 innings pitched, six earned runs and four strikeouts.
Although regular season baseball starts in the spring, conditioning and practices will being earlier. With fierce competition to get a spot on the GC roster, these players are hoping their efforts during the summer leagues will give them a better chance of locking up one of those spots.
